Nordland Reise via Arkala

 Im Frühjahr 2023 möchte ich eine Reise rund um die Ostesse machen. Das "erklärte" Ziel ist die Contest Station in Arkala. Die Reise wird voraussichtlich 10-14 Tage dauern. Meiner Einschätzung nach werden das etwa 7000km Wegstrecke werden.

 In spring 2023 I plan a trip around the east see. The "desired" goal of the trip is the contest station in Arkala. The trip is sheduled to last about 10-14 days. I expect this will be more around 7000km on the road.
 
Während der Reise plane ich zumindest eine SOTA Aktivierung in jedem Land durch das wir durchreisen.

During the trip I plan at least one SOTA activation in every country which we pass.

Nach der Conteststatuion in Finnland geht's dann weiter nach Norden zum Nordkap. In Schweden hoffe ich eine weitere große Station als Zwischenziel anreisen zu können. Kiruna die Bergbaustadt und ein Kunde dem ich vor 15 Jahren eine Gartenbahn gebaut habe sind weitere mögliche Ziele bei der Rückreise.
In Deutschland will ich die vergangenes Jahr ausgelassene Wasserkuppe befunken. Die Ziele der Reise werden aber gemeinsam festgelegt.
Apart of the contest station in Finland the trip continues north to the north cap. On the way back I hope to visit another big station in Sweden. Another possible visits are Kiruna a mining city or a big (G) scale model railroad layout which I built 15 years ago.
In Germany Wasserkuppe might be a goal which we left out last year. The final plan will be defined as a group decision.
 
Mögliche Reisetermine sind die Wochen 20/21 das endet am Pfingstwochenende. Diese 2 Wochen kollidieren mit der Veranstaltung ibn Laa/Thaya. Alternativ nach der Maker Fair in Wien Woche 23/24. Wegen der hoffentlich besseren Wettersituation und Wünschen einiger Mitreisender wird's wohl sehr wahrscheinlich dieser Termin werden.
Possible travel weeks are either week 20/21 which ends at the Whitsun weekend. This timing would collide with the HAM weekend in Laa/Thaya. So more likely are the two weeks 23/24. It is right after the maker fair in Vienna. Some of the fellows already whish the later 2 weeks. I expect that the snow situation in the north will be cleared up a bit.
 
Nach dem ersten Aufruf im Österreich Rundspruch vom 5. Februar hatte ich bereits 5 Personen im Auto sitzen. So alle mitreisen werden's wohl 2 Fahrzeuge werden müssen um bequem reisen zu können.
After the first announcement during the Austrian HAM broadcast I had 5 participants registered. If all of them will join I need another car to allow an comfortable trip for all.
 

Motto Clubabend im LV1 16. Februar 2023

 Am 16. Februar gibt es einen "Motto Clubabend" im LV1 der die Reise vorstellt und Interessenten darüber informiert. Die Reise adressiert sowohl mögliche Teilnehmer als auch "Daheimgebliebene" die die Reisekativität verfolgen wollen.
Für die Begleitung des Abends gibt es ein SWAY das Inhalte dieser Seite übernimmt und optisch attraktiver vorstellt.

Nachfolgend die Planung Stand etwa Februar März 2023. Die Liste wird sich so nicht halten lassen weil Sachzwänge zu kleinen Verschiebungen führen werden. Insbesondere Buchungen von Fähren und Quartieren werden auch die Route beeinflussen. So wurde später erwogen Grimeton nochmals zu besuchen was war bei der ersten Planung ausgeschlossen worden.

Motto Evening in Vienna's HAM Club 16th February 2023

 On this evening I will present the trip to the local HAM community in Vienna. It informs possible participants as well as HAMs which want to track the activity from home.
There is a (German) SWAY which uses infos from this page and presents it in a new variant.

Underneath there is a list of the planning data based on information available per February March. There will be adoptions based on Availability of accommodation and ferry schedules. This will change the route eventually. Later we discussed to visit Grimeton again, this was not planned in the list underneath.

Reisetag Aktivitäten / Ziele Activities
1. Reisetag Montag Abfahrt von Wien, vom berühmten Blumengeschäft, Richtung Slowakei, Bratislava, weiter Richtung Žilina (Sillein) ~300km. Bevor man die Grenze nach Polen überschreitet sollte ein SOTA Mugl benutzt werden. Entlang der Reiseroute gibt's reichlich Auswahl; bei genauerem Hinsehen leider mit langen Wanderzeiten verbunden.
Weiter nach Polen Nordöstlich von Kattowitz ist der SOTA Mugl SP/WS-003 dort in der Nähe das erste Quartier
Tagesetappe ~500km		 Start in Vienna, at the famous flower shop, heading to Slovakia, further  to Žilina ~300km. Right before crossing the border to Poland we should use one of the SOTA points along the route. There is plenty of them right and left of the highway. At a closer look some of them require a long hicking time.
Next crossing the border to Poland north east of Kattowitze there is a SOTA hill SP/WS-003 first accommodation in that area.

2. Reisetag Dienstag Durchquerung von Polen Richtung baltischer Staaten. Möglicher SOTA Mugl Szeska Góra SP/PO-003 bis dorthin 600km. In der Gegend Quartier suchen oder noch weiter Fahren nach Litauen.
Tagesetappe ~600km		 Crossing Poland northbound to the Baltic states. Possible SOTA hill Szeska Góra SP/PO-003 distance roughly 600km. Either looking for a hotel there or eventually further north to Lietuva .

3. Reisetag Mittwoch Spätestens am 3. Tag sind wir in den baltischen Staaten. In Litauen gibt es nur zwei mögliche SOTA Ziele Gedanonių kalna LY/LY-002 und Nevaišių kalnas LY/LY-001 danach weiter nach Lettland Lielais Liepu kalns YL/YL-002

4. Reisetag Donnerstag Nun kommt der dritte Baltische Staat Estland mit Suur Munamägi ES/ES-001 gibts einen schönen Aussichtsturm. Danach weiter nach Tallin zur Fähre etwa 500km. Die Fähre braucht etwa 2:30 hinüber nach Helsinki.

5. Reisetag Freitag Rauf nach Oulu durch Finnland hindurch. Nördlich von Helsinki gibts etliche SOTA Punkte an den Seen entlang, irgend einer will da sicher benutzt werden.
Tagestrip ~700km		 North to Oulu right up through Finland. North of Helsinki there are a lot of lakes and SOTA hills. We will use one of them.

5. Reisetag Samstag Von Oulu ist es eine Stunde nach Arkala und zur Station OH8X. Dort bissl herum stapfen und dann weiter Richtung Norden eventuell noch einen SOTA Mugl benutzen. Möglicher Zwischenstopp beim Schigebiet in Saariselkä. Der örtliche SOTA Gipfel ist per Auto erreichbar somit Zeitsparend.

Durchfahren bis zum Nordkap ist noch zu weit wären ~1000km.
Tagestrip 500-700km		 From Oulu it is about an hour to Arkala and the station OH8X. Spending some time there and then further north. A possible stop would be at the ski ressort in Saariselkä. The local SOTA point is accessible per car so time saving.

6. Reisetag Sonntag Vom letzten Quartier in Finnland geht's an diesem Tag nach Norwegen voraussichtlich etwa 400-500km Strecke sollte gering gehalten werden die Straßen sind da ziemlich Kurvenreich.
In der Nähe des Nordkaps sind ein paar SOTA Ziele. Quartier eher südlich vom Kap um mehr Auswahl zu haben. Planungspunkt Solvang onsite Lodges
Tagestrip 500-700km		 From the recent lodging I plan to reach the north cap. The trip will be around 400-500km. The distance should be limited as the streets are curvy.

9. Reisetag Mittwoch Das Tagesziel wird Yxskaftkälen sein. In der Umgebung gibt es ein leicht erreichbares SOTA Ziel Aajnantjahkke (Ainantjakke) SM/VB-021.
In Yxskaftkälen habe ich einen Modellbahn Kunden der eine sehr große Gartenbahn Anlage betreibt.

10. Reisetag Donnerstag Große offene Frage Route über Stockholm und an der Küste entlang oder entlang der Inlandsbahnen nach Süden. Mit einer kleinen Wanderung kommt man noch nicht zur Fähre

11. Reisetag Freitag Weiter nach Süden zur Fähre in Trelleborg. Es besteht die Möglichkeit nochmals Grimeton zu besuchen wenn man eine Westliche Route nutzt. In der weiteren Umgebung von Jönköping gibts 2 mögliche SOTA Ziele die nicht übermäßig lange aufhalten sollten.

12. Reisetag Samstag Mit der (Nacht)Fähre übersetzen nach Travemünde Deutschland. Von dort aus nach Süden in die Mitte von Deutschland. Wasserkuppe DM/HE-001 wäre vom Vorjahr noch nachzuholen.
Tagestrip 500 km		 Using the night ferry from Trelleborg to Travemünde. From there south middle Germany. Wasserkuppe DM/HE-001 was left over last year.

13. Reisetag Sonntag Aus Mitteldeutschland zurück nach Wien. Weg über Deutschland oder Tschechien noch zu definieren. Beide Länder bieten moderat hohe Gipfel an mit sehr hohen SOTA Punktewerten.
Tagestrip 650 km		 From middle Germany back to vienna. The route via Germany or Czechia needs to be defined. Both countries offer moderate high summits with high SOTA points.

Die endgültige Wegplanung hat sich etwas abgeändert aufgrund von Quartier Verfügbarkeit.

Quartiere für die fünf Personen Gruppe waren durchaus mit passablen Kosten zu bekommen. Anfang Juni gelang es meist die Übernachtung für €100-150,- für alle 5 zu finden. In Skandinavien wurden die angebotenen Hütten auf Campingplätzen genutzt. Ich habe booking.com genutzt um die Quartiere zu suchen und zu buchen. Das erleichtert auch die Verwaltung der Reise weil man alles an einer Stelle findet.
The final travel path was changed, according to accomodation availability.

It was possible to book accomodiation for €100,- to €150,- per night for the complete group of fife members. In scandinavia we often use camp grounds with their onsite lodges. I used booking.com to find the sites and to book it as well. This supports book keeping as well as everything can be found on a single WEB site.
 

Motto Abend

 Am 16. Februar 2023 gab es im Clublokal des LV1 einen Plauderabend im Rahmen der Motto Abende. Es kam eine Gruppe von Interessierten davon 2 OMs die mitfahren wollen. Die Präsentation habe ich akustisch aufgezeichnet OE1KBC hat daraus auf Basis des benutzen SWAY ein Video erstellt das zum Nachhören zugänglich ist.

Auf SOTL.as habe ich in Skandinavien alle Summits gefiltert die noch nie aktiviert worden sind. Da gibt's noch viel zu tun!

I ran a filter via SOTL.as to show all summits in Scandinavia which have never been activated. So there is a lot to do!

Got a hint from OE5MKE to visit QTH for rent. DX vacation rental with full access to Ham Radio at OH73ELK - Amateur Radio Island. It is a small detour but can be managed. The owners report that a short stay might be too expensive. Preparation and cleaning has a fixed effort apart of the staying time.

Strom Adapter?

 Zum Aufladen der diversen Kleinverbraucher Mobiltelefon, Akkulader für Funkgeräte stellt sich die Frage welche Stecker sind in den bereisten Ländern nötig? Außer in der Slovakei sind die in Österreich gebräuchlichen Formen üblich. In der Slowakei hat die Steckdose mit Erdung einen Stift, 2-polige Eurostecker lassen sich auch einstöpseln. Somit keine weitere Vorbereitung nötig; Quelle Wikipedia.
Spannung ist in allen Ländern 230V 50Hz.

Mains Adapter?

 For reloading small devices like mobile phones, battery charger for HAM gear do we need special adapters? Apart of Slovakia all countries on this trip use the connectors we have in Austria. In Slovakia the earth connector is a pin. The 2 pole Euro connector still works there. So there is no need for a special adapter. Source Wikipedia.
Voltage rating is in all countries 230V 50Hz.
 

Mögliche SOTA Gipfel

SOTA Die SOTA Ziele auf dieser Reise müssen einen Kompromiss eingehen zwischen interessanten Summits und der benötigten Wanderzeit. Daher mag manche Zielentscheidung sonderbar aussehen, das wird meist dem durch die lange Reisestrecke verursachte Zeitnot begründet sein. Neben Autofahrt und Funkerei soll auch etwas Entspannung möglich sein sowie Zeit zum Essen und Trinken.

Possible SOTA Goals

 SOTA The SOTA goals during this trip need to follow some compromises between interesting summit and required hiking time. This is the reason for some weird goal decisions. We need to respect the time for the long travel. Apart of car travel and HAM activities we want to spend some time for relaxing as well for eating and drinking.
 

Slowakei

 Die Slowakei wird voraussichtlich das erste durchreise Land sein. Der Weg geht nach Norden Richtung Kattowitz / Krakau. In der Nähe von Sillein gibt es einige SOTA Punkte die man nutzen kann.
Kučerovka OM/ZA-112 744 m scheint eine relativ kurzen Anmarschweg zu haben. Die möglichen Einstiegspukte sind nicht weit weg von der Autobahn.
Straník OM/ZA-111 768 m liegt nur etwas südlich und wäre ein weiterer möglicher rasch zu erreichender SOTA Summit

Slovakia

 Slovakia will be the first country which we cross. The path is going north to Katowice / Kraków. Near Žilina there are several SOTO summits.
Kučerovka OM/ZA-112 744 m seems to have a relatively short hiking distance. The possible start locations are not too far away from the highway.
Straník OM/ZA-111 768 m is another SOTA summit with short hiking time.
 

Polen

 Wielki Grojec SP/BZ-077 612 m nicht besonders hoch eventuell doch ein brauchbares Ziel, abhängig vom Zeitplan.
Góra Zamkowa eine Burgruine SP/WS-003 516 m bringt nur einen mickrigen SOTA Punkt sollte aber rasch zu erwandern sein. Also definitiv geeignet für fußfaule.
Im Norden kurz vor dem Verlassen von Polen im Norden bietet sich Szeska Góra simpler 1 Punkte Mugl SP/PO-003 309m an. Leichte buckelige Gegend die Wanderung sollte da nicht all zu lange dauern.

Poland

 Wielki Grojec SP/BZ-077 612 m not very high but eventually an interesting target. It depends on time.
Góra Zamkowa a castle ruin SP/WS-003 516 m offers only one single SOTA point it should be accessible with a rather short hike. No problem even for lazy ones!
Right before we leave Poland in the north there is Szeska Góra a simple 1 point summit SP/PO-003 309m. A soft humpy landscape, the hiking time should not be that long there
 

Litauen

 Nun wird's ziemlich flach, in den baltischen Staaten eine Mugl zu finden ist gar nicht so leicht. Daher gleich einmal Gedanonių kalnas LY/LY-002 257m mitnehmen ist rasch von der Straße aus erreicht.
Nevaišių kalnas LY/LY-001 289m ist auch keine große Herausforderung - wandertechnisch.

Lithuania

 Now it is going get difficult. The Baltic states are flat difficult to find summits. Gedanonių kalnas LY/LY-002 257m Not far away from the street so hiking tome will be short.
Nevaišių kalnas LY/LY-001 289m is also no big challenge - from a hiking point of view.
 

Lettland

 Sinnvoll anzufahren ist da nur Gaiziņkalns YL/YL-001 312m aus Weg technischen Überlegungen.

Latvia

 From a route point of view only Gaiziņkalns YL/YL-001 312m is the desired SOTA summit here.
 

Estland

 Suur Munamägi ES/ES-001 317m der höchste Berg im Baltikum. Hat auch ein 1'er RHC Rating 🙂
Kuutsemägi ES/ES-002 218m ist auch schnell und einfach zu erreichen.
Emumägi ES/ES-003 166m dann hätten wir Estland komplett

Estonia

 Suur Munamägi ES/ES-001 317m the highest elevation in the Balics. Offers a 1 RHC rating 🙂
Kuutsemägi ES/ES-002 218m is also easy and quick to reach
Emumägi ES/ES-003 166m would complete estonia...
 

Finnland

 So es keine besseren Ideen gibt und die Reiseroute in der Nähe von Lahti vorbei führt gibt's den höchsten Mugl im Süden von Finnland im Angebot: Tiirismaa OH/JS-037 222m wird wohl nicht attraktiv genug sein mit nur einem Punkterl Belohnung. Weiter nach Norden begegnet uns Tammimäki OH/JS-025 240m und Puntarhonganmäki OH/JS-028 235m beide Ziele recht nahe zur zu Fahrenden Straße.
Bis Oulu sind keine weiter interessanten Berge. Weiter im Norden in der Nähe einer Goldgräber Ansiedlung ist Jorpulipää OH/SL-051 470m. Das wird eventuell am letzten Tag in Finnland ein mögliches Ziel.

Finnland

 If there are no better ideas and the travel path goes in the grater area of Lahti this, we can do the highest point in the south of Finnland. Tiirismaa OH/JS-037 222m I guess just one point - it will not pay off... Further north there is Tammimäki OH/JS-025 240m and Puntarhonganmäki OH/JS-028 235m both summits are quite close to the roiad we have to drive north.
up to Oulu thre are no more summits. Further north close to a gold mining site there is Jorpulipää OH/SL-051 470m. This might be a target on the final day in Finnland.
 

Norwegen

 Das zweite Ziel der Reise das Nordkap soll erreicht werden. Auf der Insel im Norden gibt es Jalgavárri LA/FM-019 333m. Alleine die Tatsache so weit im Norden was zu aktivieren macht den Punkt zum muß.

Natürlich gibts noch weiter nördlich in Spitzbergen jede Menge weiterer SOTA Ziele, aber das muß auf eine andere Reise verschoben werden.

Norway

 The second goal is the north cap. On the island ther eis a sota summit close to the road. Jalgavárri LA/FM-019 333m. It as to be activated by the group simply because it is that for north.

Of course there is Swalbard buth that offers that many sota targets - definitely worth an extra trip.
 

Schweden

 Der Nördliche Teil von Schweden bietet kein für uns brauchbares Ziel aus Zeitmangel um die Stecken rasch zu überwinden. Dundret (Stora toppen) SM/NB-076 821m die Frage ist ob das Zeitlich erwanderbar ist. Ebenso Erik-Larsberget SM/NB-104 570m
In der Nähe von Strömsund liegt ein noch nicht aktivierter SOTA Punkt Aajnantjahkke (Ainantjakke) SM/VB-021 1246m. Weiter im Süden bietet sich noch Hökberget SM/DA-031 385m an mäßige Wanderung nötig.

Sweden

 The north part of Sweden does not offer a suitable target for us. Time is running out we have to cover the distance. Dundret (Stora toppen) SM/NB-076 821m We need to check if that summit is feasable from a time point of view. Another one Erik-Larsberget SM/NB-104 570m
Near Strömsund there is a not activated summit Aajnantjahkke (Ainantjakke) SM/VB-021 1246m. More south there is SM/DA-031 385m the hicking time is not too long.
 

Deutschland

 Dieses Jahr soll die Wasserkuppe DM/HE-001 950m nachgeholt werden das war im vergangenen Jahr aufgrund von Zeitmanagement nicht möglich gewesen. Gleich in der Nähe ist Kreuzberg DM/BM-241 928m nochmals 10 Punkte.

APRS

 Während der Reise werden einige der Teilnehmer eine Datenspur über unsere Position zur Verfügung stellen. Im Auto befindet sich ein AT587 das auf 2m APRS Pakete aussendet. Während der Wanderungen werde ich mit dem AT878 mobil ebenso Daten senden. Via Meshcom werden wir auch kommunizieren. Dafür wird im Auto ein Meshcom 4.0 Gateway mitreisen. Zu diesem Gateway werden die Teilnehmer auf 70cm Kontakt halten und kommunizieren sowohl Freitext Nachrichten als auch Positionsdaten. Eine SOTA Aktivierung via MeshCom wäre interessant, vorläufig betrachte ich die Gateways als Relais und daher kann man das zur SOTA Aktivierung nicht benutzen.

APRS

 During the trip several team members will provide position data about our activities. In my car there is a AT578 radio, I will use it to send APRS data on 2m. During hiking I will use the AT878 to send APRS on 2m as well. We will use Meshcom to send position data as well ad free text on 70cm via Meshcom 4.0. We will us small devices to use the gateway in my car while we are hicking. Meshcom devices are commumicating via the gateway so it is some sort of a repeater therefore it can't be used to activate mountaings.

The following APRS identfiers will be used:
  • OE1IAH-8 this is the car
  • OE1IAH-7 that's me during hiking
  • OE1IAH-12 that's the gateway in the car. It does not have a GPS receiver therefore it will be set manually. Positions will jump around. It is the gateway for the clients.
  • OE1IAH-1 Meshcom 4.0 Client this one has a GPC receiver
 

Funkgeräte

 Jeder Mitreisende hat einige Funkgeräte eingepackt. Wir werden ausschließlich mit QRP Leistungten arbeiten. Häufig werden wir von Bergen aus funken. Hier kann man kaum hohe Leistungen realisieren weil man den Strom selbst mittragen muß. Nachfolgend eine Liste von einghesetzter Funkausrüstung.

Ziele abseits von SOTA

 Die Reise hat 2 wesentliche Ziele dei Contest Station in Arkala und das Nordkap. Dazwischen locker eingestreut viele SOTA Punkte die damit ein Bewandern und kennen lernen der Gegend ermöglichen. Einige weitere Ziele seien kurz aufgeführt:

Goals apart of SOTA

 The trip has 2 main goals teh contest station near Arkala and the Nordkapp. Along the road there are several SOTA activations which allow us to visit the country and visit the area. Some more possible goals are listed underneath:
